Commissioner Gilda Gonzales

Gilda Gonzales, Chief Executive Officer of The Unity Council, has a long history of public service. Ms. Gonzales began her professional career in 1987 as a State Assembly Fellow working in the California State Legislature. Over the course of five years, she worked in the State Capitol and worked on numerous state and national political campaigns. In 1991, she began her career in Oakland with former Mayor Harris’ Office. During her fourteen year tenure in Oakland City Hall, she served in several capacities from budget analyst, Assistant to the Finance Agency Director, Intergovernmental Affairs Director, and dual Chief of Staff for then City Manager Robert Bobb and Mayor Jerry Brown.
In the fall of 2004, Ms. Gonzales was named the new Chief Executive Officer for the Unity Council. She leads a forty-five year old organization comprised of 200 employees with a $16M annual budget. The Unity Council is a non-profit community development corporation committed to enriching the quality of life of families and individuals primarily in the Fruitvale District of Oakland. Its focus is to assist individuals and families to build wealth and assets by implementing and managing comprehensive programs addressing economic, social, and neighborhood development.
She received a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s College, Moraga, CA in Industrial Psychology, and a Master’s of Public Administration from the California State University at Hayward. She and her husband, Ken Wysocki Ph.D., reside in Oakland.
